Pissy's Cautionary Tale
tragic household accident when she was just over two years old.

Because we have a giant breed dog, a 150# Newfie, we feed our dogs from an
elevated bowl (pictured below with Pissy nibbling out of it and Mackie the Newf
watching her), intended to decrease the risk of intestinal torsion (bloat) which is
relatively common in these breeds.  The base of the bowl is intended to be used to
store dog food in, and so is airtight, although I never used it for that.  It never
occurred to me that it could be a hazard to my darling Pissy cat, who was insatiably
curious about everything.  One evening when I was feeding the dogs, she apparently
crept into the hollow base of the bowl, which only opens on one side, and so was
invisible when I locked the bowl back onto the base.  We looked for her frantically
later that evening, only to find her suffocated/dead the next morning when we again
fed the dogs.  Please, please, please be cautious about suffocation hazards like this
around your house.  I now double check everything from the pantry to the dryer, to
the dishwasher, to the fridge before I close it up.  It was a very hard lesson to learn.
